Alpha Scholarship Endowment Fund of Iota Upsilon Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. In particular, the Alpha Scholarship Endowment Fund’s mission is to raise and distribute funds in support of scholarship, leadership, and academic excellence programs for the students of Montgomery County, Maryland. For over 43 years the Montgomery County Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha has contributed over $400,000 in scholarships to deserving Montgomery County college bound students and has trained and mentored over 300 high school students in leadership, academic excellence, and personal accountability and development skills. The Alpha Scholarship Endowment Fund aims to completely fund the acknowledgement and recognition of African American and minority students throughout Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) system. The annual Black Youth Achievement Awards (BYAA) program recognizes the academic, athletic, and service excellence of MCPS students.

Dr. Alan Cheung Community Leadership Scholarship Program

The Chinese American Parents Association of Montgomery County is offering $300 scholarships to ten individuals (Dr. Alan Cheung Community Leadership Individual Award), as well as to three groups (Dr. Alan Cheung Community Leadership Group Award).

Tevin Jones Memorial Scholarship

The Tevin Jones Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the Torrey Smith Family Fund, will award four $5000 scholarships (to be distributed over four years).

Criteria:

  • High school senior entering college in fall 2018
  • Reside in MD, VA or PA
  • Acceptance into an accredited four-year college, university or equivalent
  • GPA of 3.0 or highter
  • Involvement in extra-curricular activities
  • Completion of full application including completed student aid report from FAFSA or CSS Profile

Officer Leotta Act Responsibly Scholarship

The Officer Leotta “Act Responsibly Scholarship” carries a minimum award of $2,500. It is given in memory of Noah Leotta, a Montgomery County Police Officer who was struck by a drunk driver while on duty and succumbed to his injuries in December 2015.

Since then the Olney Chamber of Commerce has offered the “Act Responsibly Scholarship” to local high school seniors. In 2016, the amount was $2,500. In 2017, the award increased to $4,000. This year, the candidate pool will include ALL graduating seniors in Montgomery County. At a minimum, there will be one award of $2,500. Additional and/or larger awards can be made based on the number of deserving applications and available funding.

Please note that applicants will be evaluated on how their resume and essay exemplify and reflect the character shown by Officer Leotta. Academic performance is reviewed, but is not a critical selection criterion. Final selection may include an interview.

The scholarship is available for students seeking careers “on the front line for saving lives.”

Candidates will be pursuing post-HS study for career paths like these:

  • Police Department
  • Fire Department
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • Health Workers
  • Behavior Prevention, Intervention and Treatment
  • Public Safety

Student(s) selected for the “ARS” will receive the award and be recognized at the Chamber’s annual Awards Dinner in June.

Norfolk State Alumni Association Merit Scholarship

The Prince George’s County Maryland Chapter (PGCMDC) of the Norfolk State University Alumni Association (NSUAA) Student Scholarship was established in 2002 for the purpose of aiding high school seniors and current Norfolk State University (NSU) students to pursue higher education at NSU. A merit scholarship of $1000 ($500 per semester) will be offered to students who fully meet and maintain the eligibility requirements.

CRITERIA

  • Must be a Maryland resident and graduating high school senior who will be attending Norfolk State University (acceptance letter required) ~OR~
  • A Maryland resident who is currently matriculating at NSU
  • Demonstration of scholastic achievement (GPA 2.5 or higher) and motivation for higher education
  • Exhibit qualities and traits of leadership, citizenship, and service to school and community

Why/For: The 2017-2018 MC-NPHC Scholarship Applications are now available for graduating high school seniors accepted into and attending an Historical Black College or University (HBCU)

Scholarship Amount:

SCHOLARSHIPS APPLICANTS ARE JUDGED ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

  • Academic Achievement
  • Community Service
  • Writing Assignment

APPLICANT DETAILS:

  • Be a high school senior graduating from a Montgomery County Public School
  • Be a resident of Montgomery County, Maryland
  • Have a 2.5 or higher grade point average (GPA)
  • Be enrolled in an accredited HBCU institution by Fall 2017 seeking a Bachelor’s Degree and submit a copy of the college/university acceptance letter and HS transcript with final GPA

Current registered HBCU student applicants must submit proof of Fall 2017 registration along with an official academic transcript with current GPA. In addition to the application, applicants must submit:

  • Two reference letters, one community-based and one school-based
  • A 350-500 word statement entitled “How I Plan to Impact the Future”

Ron Brown Scholarship

The Ron Brown Scholarship honors the legacy of Ronald H. Brown through a selective scholarship program that advances higher education for community-minded and intellectually gifted African Americans. RBSP competitively awards Ron Brown Scholars four-year $40,000 scholarships ($10,000 each year) to the most talented and economically-challenged high school seniors who demonstrate a keen interest in public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship and global citizenship—the four pillars of the late Ronald H. Brown’s mission to uplift people of all races, cultures and ethnicities—especially our disadvantaged youth.

Recipients may use the renewable scholarships to attend an accredited four-year college or university of their choice within the United States. Ron Brown scholarships are not limited to any specific field or career objective and may be used to pursue any academic discipline. Since the Program’s inception in 1996, more than 300 students have been designated as Ron Brown Scholars.

Applicants for the Ron Brown Scholarship MUST be graduating high school seniors at the time of their application. The final application deadline is January 9th each year.

Udall Undergraduate Scholarship

The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment.

In 2018, the Udall Foundation anticipates awarding 50 scholarships of up to $7,000 each.

The Udall scholarship honors the legacies of Morris Udall and Stewart Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on Native American self-governance, health care, and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation

The Truman Foundation is the official federal memorial to our 33rd president. The Foundation is a federal executive branch agency that administers the Truman Scholarship program. The agency is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the President and Congress, endowed by a $55 million trust fund in the U.S. Treasury, and supported by a staff of five and more than 100 distinguished public servants and former Truman Scholars who participate in the selection process.

The Truman is a highly competitive, merit-based award offered to U.S. citizens and U.S. nationals from Pacific Islands who want to go to graduate school in preparation for a career in public service. The scholarship offers:

  • Recognition of outstanding potential as a leader in public service;
  • Affirmation of values and ideals;
  • Enhanced access to highly competitive graduate institutions;
  • Access to Scholar programs such as Truman Scholars Leadership Week, the Summer Institute and various Truman Fellows Programs;
  • Membership in a community of persons devoted to helping others and to improving the world; and,
  • Up to $30,000 to apply toward graduate study in the U.S. or abroad in a wide variety of fields.

2018 NAACP Scholarship Program

The Montgomery County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) offers $1000 scholarships to Montgomery County, MD, students. Eligibility:

  • Graduating high school senior
  • CGPA or WGPA of at least 3.0
  • Participation in extracurricular activities
  • Participation in faith-based, religious-based, or volunteer activities (or explanation of why this was not possible)
